Visiting and Joining Troop 1876

If you would like to visit us sometime, we meet at the Susan M. Duncan YMCA (Map) in the Community Room (don't worry about paying; when they see you're with Scouts they'll just let you in) every Tuesday night from 7:00-8:30. At our meetings, we do everything from work on merit badges, to swim, to play games, to plan upcoming campouts. Before you come, we ask that you email Scoutmaster Jim Auslen (scoutmaster@troop1876.org) so that we know you are coming and so that we can let you know if the meeting is at a different place or time from usual.

Different Troops have different program emphases and styles, so we encourage Webelos to visit multiple troops before making a final decision. What we do may not be right for everyone.

If you decide to join Troop 1876, you will need this information:

Boy Scouting is a program for boys ages 10-17 who...
Are at least 11 years old
OR
Have earned the Arrow of Light in Cub Scouts
OR
Have completed fifth grade
AND
Agree to live by the Scout Oath and Law

To join, just complete an application (available from the Scoutmaster) and submit a check for $60 annual dues (made payable to Boy Scout Troop 1876).

A boy does not have to have been a Cub Scout to become a Boy Scout. In fact, several of our scouts have no Cub Scout experience.

Annual Calendar

Our Annual Planning Worksheet is available for you to download. It contains information about where we are going for campouts and when, as well as monthly merit badges, scout skills, and special meetings. It is "SET IN JELLO", which means it is subject to change but for the most part it is accurate.

The current calendar will not be available until mid-October, but to get an idea of some events we've gone on in the past, you can look at the 2007-2008 calendar or our Troop History Page.

Backpacking

Troop 1876 is a backpacking Troop. In the next year, we will be going on SIX backpacking trips! Last summer, some of our oldset and most experienced Scouts even went to New Mexico and backpacked 105 miles in 12 days! Backpacking is really fun and one of our favorite things to do. We also have many great things to eat when backpacking, like spaghetti, breakfast burritos, teriyaki chicken, and almost anything else you can think of. Our Troop likes to backpack at White Ranch, Rocky Mountain National Park, and anywhere else we can.

Want more info? Visit the Camping and Hiking Page.

Climbing

Our newest form of adventure is rock climbing! We now own our own set of helmets, rope, harnesses, and other climbing gear! A couple of times a year, we like to head up to some rocks and explore their surfaces. Don't worry parents...It's perfectly safe! BSA requires us to take trained adults and NO ONE goes near the rock without a helmet or on it without rope.

Want more info? Visit the Climbing Page.

District Events

Our Troop also loves to staff and attend Camporees, Klondikes, and Webelos Weekends. In 2005, we had lots of Scouts staff cooking and BB guns at Camporee and in 2006, one of our Scouts ran Camporee! In 2007, we had several adults and a Scout on Council Camporee staff. We also had lots of our Scouts come to help at Webelos Weekend every year.

In addition to staffing events, we attend Camporees and Klondikes every year.

Akela Award

There is a Denver Area Council award program, called the Akela Award, to encourage webelos scouts to transition to boy scouts. You can download the information:
